Medicare Advantage HMO vs. Medicare Advantage PPO
HMO and PPO are two common Medicare Advantage plan structures.
They both provide Medicare-covered services, but they can differ significantly in how you access healthcare providers.
What Is a Medicare HMO?
HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organization.
With a Medicare Advantage HMO, you generally must use physicians, hospitals and other providers within the plan's network for non-emergency covered care.
Exceptions generally include:
Emergency care
Out-of-area urgent care
Temporary out-of-area dialysis
Some HMO-POS plans may provide limited out-of-network benefits for designated services.
What Is a Medicare PPO?
PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organization.
A Medicare Advantage PPO also has a provider network.
You generally pay less when using in-network providers.
Unlike a traditional HMO, PPO members can generally receive covered services from eligible out-of-network providers, although out-of-network costs are usually higher and providers must be willing to treat you under the plan's terms.
